FiveADay

Getting your five portions of fruit and veg a day can be a chore. It's just so much easier to fry something then cover it in whipped cream and chocolate than it is to eat a stupid apple. If only there was some way to make the crunchy dullards a little bit more exciting.

Enter Llamasoft's FiveADay, an arcade-style top-down shooter that encourages you to scoff as much of nature's bounty as you can. It's fast, frenetic, and every bit as crazed and hilarious as you'd expect from Jeff Minter.

The game casts you as a lone ship, adrift in something that looks a bit like space. From the word "go" you're attacked by a variety of flying creatures, some of whom are dragging lumps of fruit behind them. It's your job to destroy the other ships, nab the fruit, and survive until the end of the day.

At the end of each portion of the day you have to fight a small boss. Finish him off and you complete that sitting and receive a bonus for every piece of fruit you've managed to collect. Shooting is handled for you, and you control your ship by swiping a finger around the screen.

After the fifth level you've completed your first day, and if you've managed to collect at least a single piece of fruit on every level you're given an extra life. Then it's on to day two, with tougher, more triangular enemies, and different chunks of fruit and veg to snaffle.

If all of that sounds a little bonkers, that's because it is. While at heart it's a retro shooter, there's nothing quite like FiveADay anywhere on the App Store. Its controls take more than a little getting used to, and its vegetable-based humour won't be to everyone's taste.

It probably won't make you want to eat more healthily, but FiveADay is still an awful lot of fun. Fast, action-packed, and of a slightly less esoteric bent than the rest of Llamasoft's output, FiveADay will keep you entertained long past dinnertime.
