When it comes to pedigree for character-centered story-telling RPGs, you don't get much better than Canadian developer BioWare.

And that's the reason we're getting excited about iOS game Emissary of War, which is in development at Cedar Hill Games, set up by former BioWare lead Tobyn Manthorpe (Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights etc).

Brains and brawn

Promising a twisting storyline that turns everything on its head, you take the role of Ghent, a barbarian sent on a diplomatic mission that goes horribly wrong. With your alchemist companion Hassock in tow - also available as a playable character - you get to hack your way through tons of monsters, upgrading your weapons and tactics as you slash.

The characters will be fully voiced with supporting cutscenes to keep you immersed in the story.

It's alive

"It takes a lot of work to breathe life into a virtual actor, but we're not shying away from it because we want players to have proper emotions about our characters," says Manthorpe.

"We also feel like we've overcome the challenge of matching this style of game with the needs of the iOS gamer: intuitive controls and stop-and-go gameplay."

Emissary of War will be released for iPad and iPhone in summer.

You can get an idea how it will look and play in the following teaser video.
