Unofficial version of award-winning card game Dominion arrives on iOS

Dominion, the superb deck-building game and winner of the prestigious Spiel des Jahres award in 2009, has arrived on the App Store - albeit unofficially.

Dominion by Donald X. Vaccarino is a fan-made conversion of the game that (probably illegally) uses the artwork and rules from the stonking original, and includes three AI players for you to pit your chance-managing skills against.

If you're wondering why I seem unusually excited by a card game arriving on the App Store (it's not as if there aren't already hundreds, right?), then you've probably never played Dominion before.

My kingdom for a Province

It's a deck-building game that sees you drawing and spending cards during gameplay, rather than managing your deck pre-game as in Magic: The Gathering or the recent Assassin's Creed: Recollection.

Essentially, this means you're concerned not so much with purchasing foil-wrapped booster packs, but with carefully managing the number of cards in your deck, and by extension the chances of drawing them.

As the types of cards alter with each game, old tactics that might work well on one occasion might not be quite so effective on the next.

You can download the unofficial version now for free by hitting the button below.

For the patient among you, the card game's publisher, Rio Grande, has said that an official version is heading to the App Store "in a few weeks".
