The Russian hacker Alexey V. Borodin has made quite a name for himself over the past few days.

After pioneering a method that he promised would grant users the ability to download free in-app purchases (so long as they used his proxy server), Apple predictably became very interested in Borodin’s dealings.

It began its offensive against Borodin by blocking the IP address of his proxy server, but not before it could conduct 30,000 illicit in-app purchase payment requests.

Paypal similarly put the screws to Borodin and placed a block on his account for violating their terms of service.

Fight back

Despite these countermeasures, Gamasutra reports that Borodin has shifted the focus of his hack and that it still allegedly works.

Whether or not Borodin’s new workaround (which requires no interaction with Apple’s servers) can circumvent the attempts by Apple and Paypal to shut him down remains to be seen, but in the interim the revenue generated by in-app purchases is still at risk.
