Mario and Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto has told Hookshoot Inc that he is a big fan of Angry Birds, going as far to say that he wished he "had been the one to come up with the idea first".
The Nintendo legend said that while there were not many smartphone games that "have been truly convincing", he found Rovio's 700-million-downloaded physics-puzzler "one of those games I immediately appreciated when I first started playing".
"To make [the] interface and controls work that well and intuitively...well, I think a lot of work went into getting that right."
Naturally, the Nintendo man still believed that "if the developer had created the game for Nintendo DS the controls would have been even better".
For the record: Imo smartphone platforms for games is a v good place (in the country of games): Just like the classic simple games of old with room for ideas to sprout: Cheap, fun, often quick & simple and lots of choice. *hint-hint*.

I think a bunch of things are really tacitly, being said here:
1. Miyamoto is honestly appreciative of "simple game design with intuitive fun" ~ something to that effect. And I fully agree, Angry Birds may be a an idea that has been around for a long time, but combination of simple/strong ip designs and touchtastic controls really works... evidently.
2. He's indicating a redirection of his possible efforts/interests to get hands dirty again, on such titles?
3. Nintendo, through Shigeru is tacitly acknowledging smartphones CAN be gaming platforms; though oc they insist it's still lower quality than a real dedicated handset such as what they have or would have done: "I downt fink soo." to quote one of my favorite, dubbed, marshial arts movies. ;)
I hope Nintendo takes more agile choices and smaller dev projects with digital and network considerations for their future games -> new ips. : )
