The next instalment in Rovio's feather-flinging physics-based Angry Birds franchise, Angry Birds Space, is set to soar onto iOS and Android on March 22nd.

When it arrives, your favourite birds from Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, and Angry Birds Rio will be joined by a flock of new avians and a whole bunch of unique power-ups.

Let's take a closer look at them.

Red

Red is the leader of the Angry Birds pack. He's not very exciting and he's not very powerful, but he does wear a rather cool-looking "Uber Mask".

This allows him to utilise a special "sling scope" ability that highlights the "optimal flight path" for mass destruction. Nifty.

Lazer Bird

The Lazer Bird, which is basically the Yellow Bird from Rovio's previous games, sports a snazzy visor that makes him look like the X-Men's Cyclops.

Like the Yellow Bird, Lazer Bird's special power is the ability to travel at the speed of light. Well, probably not that fast, but he's ruddy quick.

The Blues

The Blues (ten points to anyone who can guess who these guys are) are experts at smashing ice-covered objects and enemies in the deepest recesses of space.

Yep, that's their special power.

Ice Bird

The Ice Bird is a completely new member of the miffed avians society. The Ice Bird is basically a giant ice cube with a beak that can freeze objects on contact.

Why would you want to do that? Well, you can freeze the green swines' defence and easily smash them to smithereens using a well-placed shot of The Blues.

Bomb

He's big, he's black, and he's brutally explosive. Bomb's Heat Shock Wave superpower allows him to incinerate any combustible materials that fall within his blast radius.

You'll be familiar with this ability if you've played any of the previous Angry Birds games.

The Incredible Terence

The Incredible Terence is packing a few extra pounds, which make him incredibly useful for removing obstacles.

For example, you can hurl the wrecking ball-esque birdie at your opponent's defences and watch as they crumble under his weight. Now we know who ate all the pies.
