Motorola set to release 20 Android handsets in 2010

Handset manufacturer Motorola is set to release 20 Android handsets this year.

Speaking to Slashgear, Tom Satchell, director of marketing for mobile devices, revealed that a number of these handsets would feature Motoblur – the company’s custom social network-focused UI – and that some would feature physical QWERTY keyboards.

Satchell did admit that not all of these 20 devices would see release in all territories or ship through carriers – a situation we in the UK are all too familiar with thanks to the lack of operator support for the well-received Milestone.

Regarding such a situation, Satchell believes the reason to be Motorola’s supply of Android devices exceeding traditional operator product cycles. There are only so many handsets your average operator can squeeze onto their roadmap.

Unfortunately, no mention was made of any new operator agreements, but we live in hope that a good portion of those 20 handsets will become available through traditional contract channels.

[Update: Motorola has just contacted us to clarify that they're hoping have 20 Android handsets on the market by the end of 2010. That includes the likes of the DEXT, which was released in September 2009.]
