Motorola officially announces the Xoom 2 and Xoom 2 Media Edition Android tablets

Having had its thunder stolen somewhat by a leaked Carphone Warehouse flyer, Motorola has now officially announced that its Xoom 2 Android tablet will be coming to a variety of UK high street shops.

In fact, there'll be two Xoom 2 tablets heading our way soon, with Motorola also unveiling the Xoom 2 Media Edition at the launch event in London today.

The standard Xoom 2 will sport a 10.1-inch widescreen display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, and will run Android 2.3. When surfing the web, the Xoom 2's battery is reported to last around ten hours, while standby time has been pegged at an impressive one month.

The 10.1-inch model will be compatible with an optional stylus, while both feature 'splash-guard' protection to cope with small splashes and spills.

Another new feature called 'Intelligent Grip Suppression' allows the tablets to detect your thumb being pressed on the edge of the screen when holding the tablet, allowing normal usage (including multi-touch) with your other hand.

The Xoom 2 Media Edition, meanwhile, sports a smaller 8.2-inch display (but still packs the same dual-core processor), and weighs in at just 386g. Furthermore, it can handle around six hours of surfing before running out of gas.

The Xoom 2 will retail at £379.99, while the Xoom 2 Media Edition will cost £329.99. A pre-order page will open soon on Carphone Warehouse's site.

We'll have lots of lovely photos and hands-on write-ups of both of the devices shortly, so keep your eyes peeled to the site tomorrow.
