Verizon trumps fastest selling Android phone with sequel - Droid X

Officially revealed the day before iPhone 4 officially shipped, Google, Motorola and Verizon seem mighty pleased about their Droid X.

The third device in the Droid line up, and the second from Motorola, Droid X can hardly be labelled an iPhone 4 killer - indeed in some respects it's less fully featured than Sprint's just launched Android-based EVO 4G - but nevertheless is an impressive smartphone.

Got the guts

It's based around a 1 GHz OMAP-based chip, it has a 4.3-inch 848 × 480 resolution screen, a rear mounted dual-flash 8-megapixel camera with 720p video capability, and comes with 8GB of onboard Flash memory, plus a 16 GB MicroSD card, as well as HDMI connectivity.

It will be sold with Android 2.1 but be upgraded with 2.2, and Flash 10.1, over-the-air during the later half of the summer when Verizon will update its entire Android range.

Due to be launched - in the US only - on July 15, Droid X is priced at $199.99 on a two year plan (after a $100 rebate), and requires an unlimited data contract starting from $29.99, on top of the standard $39.99+ monthly talk plan.

Interestingly, the Droid X can also operate as a 3G wi-fi hotspot for up to five devices, although this will cost an additional $20 monthly for 2 GB of tethering data.

X marks the spot

"Nine months ago, we made a commitment to our customers to bring the openness of Android to the Verizon Wireless network," said John Stratton, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless.

"Since then, we have introduced the top-selling Android phone in the marketplace today – the DROID by Motorola. DROID X takes that commitment to another level with exclusive content, faster processing speeds, and, of course, the reliability of our network."
