Gameloft expands onto Xbox Live Arcade

Mobile publisher taking Prince Of Persia to consoles

Gameloft expands onto Xbox Live Arcade

Bear with us on this one, there are implications. 1UP.com is reporting that Gameloft is developing a remake of the original Prince Of Persia game for Xbox Live Arcade, the downloadable games service for Microsoft's Xbox 360 console.

The game will feature the same levels as the original, but with tarted-up graphics to take advantage of the console's power, along with new puzzles, traps and enemies. It's due out this summer.

So what's the mobile angle? Well, the fact that a mobile publisher like Gameloft is getting involved with Xbox Live Arcade is great news for mobile gamers. Why? Because it might start a trend.

Imagine some of your favourite original mobile games making the leap to console download services (not just Xbox Live Arcade, but Sony's PlayStation Network and Nintendo's Virtual Console too). We'd love to see a beefed-up Tower Bloxx, for example, or a whizzier Turbo Camels: Circus Extreme.

Equally, it might make more hardcore gamers give mobile games a second look.

The console manufacturers are keen for new ideas for their download services, and it seems to us that there are plenty of mobile publishers and developers capable of providing them. Fingers crossed others follow Gameloft's example in the months ahead.
