Women and mobiles: a match made in heaven

Phones come in pink too, you know

It's not only games companies who occasionally turn their devices pink to try to appeal to women. Mobile phone makers have been experimenting with it for a while now, with several stylish handsets rocking the rouge look.

Nokia's 6111 was a good example, turning an already-decent slide phone into an attractive accessory. But the most desirable pink phone is undoubtedly Motorola's feminised RAZR V3, which is a powerful 3G handset that manages to be sleek and stylish at the same time. Samsung's E900 and Sony Ericsson's Z520i have also taken the blusher approach, with some success.

But once you've got your pink phone, what to play on it? In the early days of mobile games, publishers focused a bit too much on games for men of a certain age (specifically those who'd grown up with Pac-Man or Sega Megadrive consoles).

Despite this, from those very earliest days mobile gaming has boasted the healthiest male to female ratio of all games platforms (that's assuming that a 50/50 ratio would be ideal - apologies to our bigamist readers), probably due to everyone having a phone, and the plethora of puzzle games out there.

As a result, publishers are now trying to develop more games specifically for this existing female market, be they young teens or women in the prime of their boardrooms.

Pocket Gamer recommends Paris Hilton's Diamond Quest for starters. Even if you hate La Hilton, the game is an addictive puzzler with hidden depths. Meanwhile, Paris would surely approve of virtual pup sims like My Dog or Dogz, which put your pooch-rearing skills to the test.

Turning up the temperature - and the target age group - we reviewed Miami Nights today as part of our Pink Friday special focus. Flirting, chatting, drinking... what better way to keep yourself occupied in the cab on the way to real-life flirting, chatting and drinking?

The Sims 2: Mobile Edition is a phone conversion of the popular PC strategy game, which famously skews equally male and female in its committed gamers. Finally, Amy's Adventure puts you in the shoes of an intrepid explorer called, yes, Amy, who's half Indiana Jones and half Lara Croft.

Try them, or try anything else you fancy from our Mobile Buyer's Guide. You buy mobile games without leaving your living room (you get them sent straight to your handset) so you don't even have to rub shoulders with the teenage males in the High Street.

Well, not unless you want to...
