3GSM 2007: Hands on with the Transformers mobile game

Star attraction on Glu Mobile's stand at the 3GSM show this week – although you have to do secret handshakey stuff to see it – is Transformers. It's the official mobile game of the upcoming movie.

You play as the Autobots, trying to find hidden energy on Earth before their arch-rivals the Decepticons. Unfortunately, the game is still so secret, Glu isn't allowed to give out any screenshots of it yet.

But I did have a go on it.

First impressions are that Transformers is a slick platform game which, while it doesn't do anything wildly innovative with the genre, looks good and plays smoothly.

You control Optimus Prime, able to flick back and forth between his gun-toting robot and big truck modes at will – the latter is fun, as you steam through enemies knocking them over. You'll also be able to get other Autobots to help along the way, although I didn't see who and how while I was playing it.

The version I played is 2D, although there will be a 3D version available too. The latter will still be a 2D platformer, mind: it's just the scenery and characters will be more rounded within it.

It plays well – and the current tagline of 'Play as Optimus Prime on your phone' is probably the only other selling point Glu will need.

The game is due out in late June or early July, in advance of the film in July (and the PSP and DS versions of Transformers). We'll bring you screenshots as soon as we can get 'em.
