EA reveals Robin Hood for mobile

EA has released screens and info on its upcoming Robin Hood movie tie-in on mobile. Pocket Gamer was invited along to take a look at the game in action.

As you’ll no doubt have seen, Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe are reuniting to tell a blockbuster origin story for the legendary outlaw.

The mobile game takes the shape of an isometric action romp, although it incorporates strong RPG (you can level up each of Robin’s attributes) and stealth elements into the mix. With ten of the 14 levels taking place in fairly open environments, you’re free to approach the game in a number of ways.

Robin’s pretty handy with a sword, so you can dash into the fray furiously slashing away with some success (though you’ll inevitably need more of the health potions left lying around by downed foes and in chests).

Alternatively, you can enter sneak mode by pressing ‘0’, which slows your pace significantly and reveals your enemies’ view cones, allowing you to skulk by in the undergrowth.

If you’ve ever played a Metal Gear game, you’ll know how this plays out.

Once you get your hands on Robin’s trademark bow you can also launch attacks from afar. Pressing and holding the 'attack' button when facing an enemy causes a contracting green circle to appear around them. Once this turns red you can release for a one-shot kill.

The other four levels in the game are made up of rather more typical, fast-paced mini-games. These involve shooting opposing archers as they pop up – a kind of mediaeval Whac-a-Mole, if you like.

The only major element missing from this tie-in is Russell Crowe himself. The grouchy New Zealander wouldn’t allow his likeness to be used in the game.

EA didn’t have to look far for a solution, though – the clue is in the title. Yes, rather than an arsey-RC, you’ll be spending the game (or at least the story sections) looking at a suitably hooded figure. In your face, Hollywood!

Robin Hood: The Movie Game will be out on May 15th to coincide with the movie release, so keep an eye out for our review before then.
