Operator hoping it'll kickstart sales

Near enough every mobile games publisher has complained at one time or another that the biggest roadblock on the growth of mobile gaming is the operator portals.

They're hard to navigate, don't provide enough information on individual games, and look rubbish. That's the argument, anyway – the operators would disagree on some or all of those points.

Orange is doing its bit to improve matters, with the launch of something called Portal Booster. It's an application designed by Mobile Scope, which is preloaded on phones and that offers users a less fiddly way to browse and buy mobile games.

Orange is launching the app on Sony Ericsson's W910i and K850i handsets in the UK and France, according to Mobile Entertainment. Game trials appear to be a part of the platform, too, as a way to stimulate the uptake of mobile gaming.

Will it work? Time will tell, but full credit to Orange for trying a new tack to boost downloads.
