Pokémon Go’s events for January 2023 have already kicked off and the year’s first Community Day is set to go live on January 7th. Usually, we only see one of these per month but Niantic had something special planned for trainers as Larvitar returns in the Community Day Classic event.

During the Community Day Classic event, a Pokémon that has been featured previously comes back into the spotlight. Larvitar was last seen on June 16th, 2018 and will be back on January 21st, between 2:00 and 5:00 pm local time. The Rock Skin Pokémon will be seen in the wild at a higher rate while its Shiny variant can also be found.

Trainers managing to gather enough Larvitar Candy will be able to evolve the Pokémon to Pupitar and then finally to a Tyranitar that knows the Fast Attack Smack Down. It deals 12 damage in Trainer Battles and 16 in Gyms and Raids. To get this exclusive move, players will need to evolve their Pupitar before 7:00 pm.

As it is with these events, a number of bonuses will become active. Lures Modules and Incense activated during the event will remain active for three hours. This will allow players to catch more Pokémon which is a good thing as well because there’s 3x XP just for doing that. Snapping some photos during the event should reveal a surprise too.

In addition to this, a Community Day Special Research story that grants encounters with Larvitar will also go live on the 21st. The tickets cost $1.00 or your local equivalent and should go live soon. Do note that no follow-up raid battle will be available once the Community Day celebrations end, unlike the usual ones.
