Nokia’s latest flagship telecommunications device has endured a few setbacks, but the Finnish manufacturer has confirmed today that the first batch of N900 units has shipped, which means it will be in the clammy palms of punters worldwide very soon.

The new phone - which showcases a super-powerful ARM Cortex-A8 processor - was announced in August and due for official release last month, but unfortunately slipped to the middle of November.

Still, all good things come to those who wait, as the old saying goes. The N900 is referred to by its parent company as a “mobile computer” rather than a mobile phone, and is based on the open-source Maemo 5 operating system.

José-Luis Martinez, Vice President of Nokia’s Nseries division, is understandably excited about the whole thing. "The Nokia N900 has generated a lot of interest since its public launch in August, which has been reflected in the device pre-orders," he said in the official press release issued today.

"What's exciting is the Maemo software, which takes its cues from the desktop computer and offers a full browsing experience like no other handset. We believe the Nokia N900 will be a very compelling device for people who are passionate about technology."

Other things to get excited about include 32GB of onboard storage, a 5 megapixel camera, QWERTY keyboard, Home screen widget support and of course complete access to Nokia’s Ovi Store. Before you ask, no, N-Gage support isn’t going to happen.

The N900 comes with lofty a retail price of around 500 Euros.

Damien's mum hoped he would grow out of playing silly video games and gain respectable employment. Perhaps become a teacher or a scientist, that kind of thing. Needless to say she now weeps openly whenever anyone asks how her son's getting on these days.
