Bobby's Blocks

When I was a kid, the last thing I wanted to do was spend my time figuring out brain boggling block puzzles. I’d much rather lob said blocks at my sister’s head, or perhaps (if my Mum was watching) build a sprawling base for my action figures.

The Bobby of Bobby’s Blocks is a rather more cerebral child.

Here you’re tasked with helping him solve a number of spatial puzzles, each of which consist of getting – wait for it – Bobby’s blocks from one side of the stage to the other.

Each of the oblong blocks needs to be rolled over and over in order to make progress, but the levels are increasingly tight affairs that call for well though out movement.

Familiar feeling

If this premise sounds familiar, that’s because plenty of games have done it before. The most prominent example on mobile has to be Digital Chocolate’s Diamond Islands series, but Bobby’s Blocks’s stripped back style more closely resembles Sky Blox.

If anything, Bobby’s Blox is even more of a bare bones offering, simply offering up a string of increasingly elaborate levels. Some of these are quite entertaining, particularly when they begin to introduce red and blue switches and half-blocks that inhibit your movement.

But really the game suffers for the lack of modes. It’s crying out for time and move-limited variations – anything that gives you a little more blocks for your bucks.

Solid as a block

The unfinished feel carries through to the visuals too. The blocks and levels are functional at best, and the backgrounds – resembling garish kiddie wallpaper – are slightly odd.

Still, the core puzzling at the heart of Bobby’s Blocks is solidly entertaining.

It’s an incredibly lean package, but what’s there is undoubtedly good fun, and fans of this particular kind of puzzling won't be too disappointed with what they find here.

Unfortunately, though, there are other mobile games on the market that do the same as Bobby’s Blocks but with more style, variety and content.

A solidly playable puzzler that loses out to similar but far more polished and fully featured rivals
