Ubisoft's history-inspired series Assassin's Creed has made its way over to Java, and the third entry is as explosive as ever.

Set during the American Revolution, it sees you taking on the role of Connor Kenway, a half-Native American, half-British assassin as he single-handedly thwarts the British army.

This is primarily driven by the selfish desire to avenge the burning of his village at the hands of Charles Lee, but his intentions are good so you've got to give him that at least.

Of course, you only get this information from the text introductions and occasional in-game dialogue.

There's plenty to do, too, as Gameloft has done a grand job of including various gameplay modes.

You'll be sailing along the coast of America engaging in battles, running through the woods in the summer and winter, and taking down redcoats across Boston and New York.

There are even Assassin Guild missions to partake in, whereby you send out assassins to gain skill points and expand your Assassin empire.

Assassin's Creed 3 is one of the best-looking Java games around, complete with solar flares and detailed takedowns and assassinations. It's just a shame that the controls are complex and incredibly fiddly to play with. There's also a stark lack of reasonable checkpoints, with some deaths dragging you back to the start of a level.

Even so, this a very well-produced and highly enjoyable entry in the Assassin's Creed franchise.

A welcome entry into the Assassin's Creed series, but one that still needs a little refinement to make it truly exceptional
