Ambition is a great thing to see from any developer. It's a sign that they really want to create something special.
However, ambition can also by dangerous. It sometimes leads to a lack of direction and a game stuffed with ideas that are all mediocre at best.
This is the fate that has befallen Alexia the Great.
Rebels have overthrown the land of Gun's Kingdom and their leader sits upon the throne as an illegitimate ruler. Their arrival has turned the kingdom on its head as they attack innocents and pillage villages.
So, it's up to you to step in as a warrior queen and reclaim your throne by killing all of those who cross your path.
Set across a rather vast level map, the gameplay is reasonably varied, seeing you fight out in the open, navigate forts, and even ride horses in chase sequences. But, while these are certainly interesting ideas, they're all painfully average and generally quite clunky.
Combat is a little dull, requiring you to just run at an enemy and then enter into battle. Mashing the 'attack' key usually sees you come out on top and unscathed, and it gets dull after a little while.
It's also a little clunky and jerky to play - although that's most likely down to the intensive 3D rendering going on around you, as characters are surprisingly detailed for a 3D Java title.
Still, that's not enough to really redeem Alexia the Great beyond a mediocre title at best.
