Lawyers from Mojang – the company responsible for the development of Minecraft – have contacted Junk Jack developers Pixbits, amongst others, regarding a possible copyright infringement.

Although details are still developing via a dialog between Markus 'Notch' Persson (the creator of Minecraft) and Pixbits on Twitter, it appears the issue relates to the use of the word 'Minecraft' in Junk Jack’s keywords.

Aesthetic and gameplay similarities between the two games are readily apparent, and Pixbits has never claimed otherwise as they endeavored to stay 'really genuine' toward Perrson’s work on Minecraft.

Crafting a response

Notch responded to Pixbit’s inquiry – quickly and amicably – stating that Mojang’s lawyers have recently sent out 'a bunch' of copyright infringement notices relating to the use of Minecraft’s name in the marketing of another app.

Pixbits has sent a request in to Apple requesting that the offending keyword be removed.

Assuming that the discussion between Mojang and Pixbits remains civil, it seems unlikely that Junk Jack will face any further legal issues.

It will be interesting to see whether other developers are less accommodating, however.
