Mojang's Minecraft is something of a gaming phenomenon - both in terms of sales figures and far-reaching appeal.

Its pixellated charms have probably contributed to the marriage breakdowns of millions of would-be architects and obsessive-compulsive shelf stackers the world over.

Judging by statistics revealed by the indie sensation's developer, Minecraft - Pocket Edition for iOS and Android is a chip off the old block in more ways than one.

According to Mojang business development dude Daniel Kaplan, the portable version of Minecraft has racked up a gargantuan 700,000 sales in just under two months.

Building success

Despite Minecraft - Pocket Edition lacking key survival features from the full-sized version, this - ahem - towering achievement has proven that Minecraft's popularity transcends barriers like control issues and platform restrictions.

That said, Mojang is expected to submit a Minecraft - Pocket Edition update by February 8th that will bring animals, new blocks, and some of those missing Survival elements to the portable version. Crafting options will unfortunately not be included, mind.

With Mojang shifting an estimated 5,000 copies of Minecraft - Pocket Edition every day, however, it's clear that the prospect of building a blocky replica of the USS Enterprise on a mobile phone is too tempting for the average gamer to resist.
