Microsoft reveals plans for Rock Band on mobile

Okay, so multi-instrumental console music game Rock Band isn't coming to mobile just yet. Not least because EA Mobile hasn't figured out how to plug the tiny drumkit into phones (possibly).

But Microsoft does have its own mobile plans for Rock Band. They'll involve a promotional mobile site for Xbox 360 to be launched this summer in the UK, according to New Media Age magazine.

Apparently, festival-goers will be encouraged to send videos of themselves playing the game to the site, as part of some kind of user-generated content competition – presumably this means there'll be Rock Band booths at the festivals.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is clearly ramping up its overall plans for mobile promotion of Xbox 360 games, with online marketing manager Luke Gregory telling NMA that, "We previously looked at mobile as a content play for trailers and screensavers, but it's now on Microsoft's wider agenda."

This is the real point as far as Pocket Gamer is concerned. Hopefully this'll mean Microsoft looking to license more of its own Xbox 360 and Live Arcade games to mobile publishers, following in the footsteps (skidmarks?) of Project Gotham Racing.

Of course, Rock Band isn't published by Microsoft – it's a joint effort between EA and MTV. Its focus on real-world peripheral-based multiplayer doesn't seem an idea fit for a mobile conversion, to say the least, but stranger things have happened…
