Z2Live to launch freemium multiplayer air combat game MetalStorm: Online globally
Currently only available in Canada
There haven't been many air combat games on iOS; at least not since the leader in the field SGN ran into trouble last year.
It was bought recently by MySpace co-founder Chris DeWolfe and is being rolled into his MindJolt Games outfit.
Still, the developer of its air combat games F.A.S.T. and Skies of Glory was Romanian studio Revo. And being a curious type, I wonder if it's behind Z2Live's new iOS air combat game MetalStorm: Online.
One reason is that it looks like a cross between F.A.S.T. and Skies of Glory - mixing up free-to-play gaming fast jets and online competition in an arcade style.
Of course, it doesn't really matter who developed it.
//Amended: We're since been informed the game was developed internally at Z2's Seattle studio.
Looping the loopCurrently only available on the Canadian App Store for testing purposes, but going global on May 12, MetalStorm: Online uses Game Center so you can fight against other pilots, using either 3G or wi-fi.
There's a co-op Survival mode too, and in both situations, you can use in-game voice chat to say what needs to be said.
Control occurs using tilt, plus various touchscreen gestures for manoeuvers. Dozen of real and imaginary aircraft are available, and you can trick them out with various weapons loads, as well as tweaking them with tech upgrades with respect to speed, agility, lock-on time, energy, stealth, armour and damage.
Obviously you have gain XP and use the in-game Gold currency - which you can also buy with real cash - to unlock these.
MetalStorm: Online is now available in the Canadian App Store for iPhone and iPad, and globally from May 12. It's free-to-play.
You can see what it's like in the following video.
