Not a slimy mollusc fixed down to your garden decking with staples (what an evil thought), the Metal Slug in question is rather the kind of tank not even the Americans have yet invented.

For, unlike the original Daleks (until the BBC cheated and gave them teleports), this Metal Slug is a war machine with the sort of hi-tech flexibility that enables it to climb steps.

Naturally, it's also armed with the usual array of death-bringing cannons and other weaponry and hence ideally equipped to star in a sidescrolling shoot 'em up, which is what the Metal Slug series of games has been offering for the past decade.

Now announced for the GBA, you'll soon be able to slug it out through the battlefields of the future, which are populated with old-fashioned boss characters as well as enemy artillery, planes, troop carriers and helicopters.

It's not all blood-and-guts though; another thing Metal Slug is known for is its offbeat humour. You can also offset your destructive tendencies with good works, by releasing prisoners of war as you make your way through the six levels.

No release date has yet been given.
