Metal Gear Solid goes mobile!

It looks amazing, but how will it play?

Metal Gear Solid goes mobile!

If you want a sign that mobile gaming HAS got the attention of console industry bigwigs, you need to look to Japan. Square Enix recently showed off several Final Fantasy branded mobile games, and now Konami used its 20th Anniversary event in Tokyo to unveil a proper 3D mobile Metal Gear Solid game.

Rawk! Right? Well, hopefully. There's a trailer for the new game online, and it looks fantastic. Solid Snake lurking behind a wall looks better than PSone quality, and to be honest not far off PS2. It looks like the game will be jampacked with atmospheric cut-scenes too.

So why aren't we jumping for joy just yet? First, it's only confirmed for a Japanese release so far, including a specially branded MGS handset from Sony Ericsson which the game will be preloaded on.

There's no news on when it'll be released even there, let alone make the leap to European phones.

But we'll also reserve judgement on how good a mobile Metal Gear Solid game can be until we've actually played it. Will the controls be too fiddly on a phone, or will Konami rework the game in a similar vein to what Eidos did with Tomb Raider Legend, to make it play well?

Still, it's big news in the world of mobile gaming. Now, if Konami could get round to telling us what happened to its mobile version of Pro Evolution Soccer...
