We brought you the surprising news last month that BioWare would be bringing their popular Mass Effect franchise to iPhone. Now it seems that the project has an official name: Mass Effect Galaxy.

The name was revealed on the BioWare blog, which also featured a brief interview with Executive Producer Kevin Barrett.

As well as confirming what we knew about the positioning of Galaxy in the Mass Effect time line (it’ll be set between Mass Effects 1 and 2 on the Xbox 360), he went into why the main character Jacob Taylor was chosen (he’s a badass marine, and Galaxy will be heavy on the combat) and the unique challenges of bringing such an epic franchise to the pick-up-and-play iPhone.

“Our challenge was very much like trying to distill a full season mini-series down to a half-hour tv episode,” said Barrett, “Dialog had to be tight, the pace of conversations had to be quickened and our traditional ‘investigation dialog hubs’ (where the player can ask questions about his current situation) were trimmed significantly.”

So Mass Effect Galaxy appears to be shaping up as a lean, mean fighting machine. More news as we get it.
