Where would the world of gaming be without quirky Japanese RPGs? No spiky-haired characters confused about their personality or endless battles though endless caves, or bizarre creatures with the heads of fish and legs of Gozilla or travel by nuclear airships... The list goes on and on. Well add a new twist to the list with Lunar Genesis.

The plot is the usual RPG fare though. In the world of Lunar, vicious demons have started to invade, despite the protection of creator goddess Althena. It’s up to you, blue spiky-haired human boy Jian, and your group of friends, to unravel the evil plot being laid against Althena and discover how alone you can save Lunar from the forces of evil.

The twist comes with the battle system - which is card-based - in which you have to turn the dark enemy creatures into beings of light. You can then take them into a Colosseum game mode for further battles. In the story part of Lunar, the battle work as group affairs, with Jian and up to two other characters - these include more colourful spiky-haired friends with names such as Gabryel, Lucia, Flora and Rufus - squaring up to a plentiful supply of baddies. Control occurs using the DS’ touchscreen where characters take turns to perform actions and spells and you can also give verbal orders using the microphone. And just to make sure you’re making friends outside of the game, you can share rare items you’ve collected during your travels in Luna with other players using wi-fi.

Lunar Genesis is due for release in November 05
