The little fire-breather comes to Nintendo handheld this autumn

Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon confirmed for DS

The Spyro trilogy will come to a conclusion later this year with the release of The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon. Vivendi has just announced the game, which will be available on DS as well as Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and PS2. There's no PSP version so presumably some marketing types decided Spyro's a bit too much of a kiddy game for the PSP crowd.

Getting top bill on the press release is the news of all the famous types who will be voicing characters in the game. We've got no idea if these voiceovers are just for the home console versions, but just in case you're interested the actors include Elijah Wood, Gary Oldman (Sirius in the Harry Potter films) and the strange but beautiful Christina Ricci.

The game itself follows a plot in which Spyro teams up with former enemy Cynder to stop the Dark Master in his evil-doing tracks.

This means it also incorporates a drop-in/drop-out co-op mode which, in turn, allows players more freedom to explore the game world in new ways.

Another new feature is that Spyro is no longer restricted in his flying and can take off whenever he likes. He must have been practising since the last game.

"The game takes some exciting twists and turns – fans of the series and newcomers alike will experience non-stop fun, a renewed sense of intensity and the type of challenging adventure only Spyro can overcome." said Sierra senior vice president Al Simone.

We'll find out if all this is true when the game's released this autumn. Click 'Track It!' to follow the game's progress from now until then.
