Gamevil takes a step away from its retro action RPG style with its newest Android release Last War – a very hardcore menu-based World War II tactical RPG.

More akin to a Storm8 social title such iMobsters, Last War (which is already out for iPhone) get players to configure and train units of Axis or Allied forces.

You perform missions to build up your level and resources, so you can perform more missions, build more buildings and get more weapons.

Friend codes control your in-game enemies and friends, so setting up a friends-only roster of allied nations is fairly easy.

Alliances and diplomacy are handled through the in-game social system, which allows for players to communicate in real-time and also offers the option to blacklist your enemies.

Storming the beaches

Yet, despite the pretty girl in uniform encouraging you to play, be warned that Last War is a characteristic Gamevil release in terms of the amount of grinding required.

Underneath the menus, there's an interesting tactical game in operation - one example is the way you upgrade and use your commanders - but graphically and minute-by-minute, you're dealing with menus, buttons and the resource management of numbers.

It's also pretty slow for the first hour.

But if that sure of things floats your boat, Last War is free-to-play so you can check it out right now on Google Play [link].
