Amazon announces Kindle Fire Android tablet – 7-inch screen, $199, wi-fi
Cheap, possibly cheerful
As I write Amazon's Jeff Bezos is taking to the stage in New York to announce the company's new tablet computer, the comprehensively rumoured Fire. And as we reported all the way back at the beginning of the month, it's cheap. $199 to be precise.
For this bargain bin price you'll get a 7-inch tablet computer with wi-fi but without a camera or 3G. You'll also get a month's free subscription to Amazon Prime. It'll run Android.
We know this before the event has got into full swing because Bloomberg reported it, apparently legitimately, using an official product shot, four minutes before the event began. More news to follow.
