Kerplinkus promises retro take on match-based puzzle play
Mixing the old with the new
Considering the somewhat futuristic tech that goes into the iPhone - I can't be the only one who feels like they're starring in a Minority Report follow-up every time I pick one up - it's perhaps surprising the amount of retro-esque titles that have flooded the App Store.
Not only are remakes of arcade classics commonplace, but also fresh titles that look like they've been plucked straight from Atari HQ, circa 1979.
Binary Square's forthcoming puzzler Kerplinkus is one such title. The game focuses on swapping blocks around on a grid at the bottom of the screen so that it matches up with incoming blocks flying down from the top of the screen.
Not quite match-three, but certainly of that ilk. Yet the whole thing comes with a distinctly old skool flavour, Binary Square president and CEO Dan Bliss stating its part of the developer's desire to "recreate retro gaming for iPhone and iPod touch".
He added, "The game features simple retro graphics with colour cycling; retro old school music and sound effects created with the SID chip from the Commodore 64; online leader board; auto save; play iPod music in the background and in-game volume control."
Though no UK price has yet been mentioned, Binary Square says Kerplinkus will launch shortly on the App Store for $0.99, suggesting a low price point on this side of the Atlantic, too.
