The idea of paying every time you play a game isn't new, as anyone who spent their youth pumping coins into Pac-Man or Golden Axe will know.

Pay-per-play isn't even a new thing for mobile games, with operators like 3 having launched games that cost 50 pence a go. Now Gamefederation has teamed up with Jump Games to launch a new pay-per-play mobile gaming service, called Jump Arcade.

Games will be free to download on the service, with gamers paying a set amount every time they play them. The Jump Arcade portal will launch first in the UK, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark, while Tele2 in Sweden has become the first European operator to sign up to offer the service to its customers.

Pay-per-play is a good idea in mobile, not least because it makes gaming more affordable to people with pay-as-you-go phones, who often don't have £5 of credit to buy a full-priced mobile game.

However, Jump Arcade's success will depend on how much a single play costs, and whether the games on the service are good enough to tempt users to part with their cash. Naturally, we'll be checking the service out as soon as it launches, so click 'Track It!' to stay in the loop.
