The Independent Games Festival has rapidly been increasing in popularity over the last few years, with more gamers showing interest in this indie conference than many of the big, commercial ones. In 2007, the IGF launched a sister event in the shape of IGF Mobile, and has just announced that the 2009 festival will feature a section dedicated to the iPhone.

On top of inaugurating this new and significant accolade, the IGF Mobile has teamed up with ngmoco, the Kleiner Perkins-funded iPhone publisher co-founded by former EA executive Neil Young, to offer a US$10,000 'Best iPhone Game' grand prize.

"ngmoco is proud to support the independent development community and burgeoning micro-studios who are dedicated to creating device defining 'only on iPhone, games", Alan Yu, vice president, Artist & Repertoire at ngmoco said. "As game makers, we've long admired the IGF for showcasing and highlighting innovation and independent thinking in games."

iPhone developers will be eligible for all IGF Mobile categories, which also include game design, art, technical and audio awards, a Best Game award, and other major prizes.

"We're delighted to be working with ngmoco to help discover the best iPhone games out there," said Simon Carless, Chairman of the Independent Games Festival. "We're starting to see open platforms and innovation spread indie goodness into fascinating new places, and highlighting worthy, high quality iPhone games is something that will benefit both discerning consumers and developers."

Entry into the second IGF Mobile event is free this year, so all budding iPhone developers should head on over to the official IGF Mobile site (before the November 17th deadline) and sign up.

Spanner Spencer
Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
