Opinion may be divided on whether the iPhone really is a threat to the DS and PSP in what business types like to call the 'handheld space', but the device's serious gaming credentials have received a considerable power-up with the news that Namco has just made I Love Katamari available on the App Store.

The Katamari franchise started on PS2 and has since appeared on the Xbox 360 and the PSP in the form of Me & My Katamari. A mobile version called Rolling with Katamari is also on the way.

The game basically involves rolling a sticky ball called a Katamari around, trying to get as many objects as possible to adhere so that your Katamari grows and harvests even larger objects. It may not sound like much, but it's genius.

The iPhone game includes a Story mode, in which you have to collect specific objects; an Exact Size Challenge mode, in which you have to attain a particular size; an Eternal mode, where you can roll for as long as you like; and a Time Attack mode.

I won't insult your intelligence.

You control your katamari by tilting your iPhone, which sounds pretty ideal. It costs $7.99, and it weighs in at 82MB. Click 'Track It!' to catch our forthcoming review.
