Hyper Cannon arcade shooter for the iPhone
A Space Invaders evolution
Come to think of it, why haven’t we got an official Space Invaders on the iPhone yet? The recent DS evolution of the series, Space Invaders Extreme, was totally awesome and would work a treat on the iPhone.
In the meantime we’ve just heard about Hyper Cannon, which adopts a similar approach to the vertical shooter to Space Invaders - with the vertically-fixed, rail-mounted cannon at the bottom of the screen - but appears to employ more of a typical shooter mechanic than fending off marching aliens.
Asteroids rain down on your planet, sent by evil mechanised, er… invaders, and it’s up to you as the Hyper Cannon pilot to repel them. The gameplay video below walks you comprehensively through Hyper Cannon’s gameplay, demonstrating the fascinating power ups, shield and control system.
Although it’s not actually scrolling, this game looks to be a pretty strong contender for the vertical scrolling shooter genre, which the iPhone needs more of (in this coin-op starved writer’s opinion).
