We remember a time when horses only existed in games for two reasons: as unsuspecting targets to try out a new shotgun on; and, in the case of the Nintendo 64's Zelda: Ocarina of Time, to get you across Hyrule field faster than the 15 minutes it took on foot.

But all that's changed thanks to the DS. D3Publisher has just announced it's bringing horse sim game Horse Life – a game in which you actually get to look after an equid chum – to the handheld this November.

Horse Life makes it the third horse game we've heard about in as many weeks. There's also Ubisoft's Horsez and Atari's My Horse and Me. That's a lot of fillies.

Sticking to the carrot-muncher in question, though, Horse Life is a simulation that seems to bear a few similarities to Nintendogs on the surface. You'll need to care for your horse, by cleaning its stable and feeding and petting it.

Three horse breeds are available from the starting line – we won't claim to be able to tell the difference between them – with a fourth unlockable after completing all of the game's competitions.

The gameplay footage for Horse Life shows these competitions, where you guide your horse around jump, cross and dressage events using the DS stylus. It actually looks quite nicely done, which coming from us is saying something – we're the types to approach a horse with the sort of caution normally reserved for live land mines.

Will it be a pure thoroughbred or pile of muck? Check out the trailer below to get an idea:
