Feeling horny? Seven-foot redhead guarantees satisfaction with comic book action

It takes quite a lot of effort to stand out in the modern comic book world, with just about every combination of freak, geek and pneumatically breasted heroine having been inked into existence. And yet somehow Hellboy still manages to get himself noticed.

Could it be his dark humour? His pragmatic approach to problem-solving? Maybe it's his shadowy past that does it, or then again perhaps it's just the fact that he's a seven-foot, brick-fisted crimson-skinned devil with filed-down horns?

Whatever the reason for his cult appeal – which has so far spanned comic books and a Hollywood movie – Hellboy is soon going to be extending his reach even further into the digital realms of PSP and mobile games.

Based upon Mike Mignola's acclaimed series from Dark Horse Comics, Hellboy the game promises to let you unleash his supernatural strength to smash, crush and generally demolish your way through six unique locations in an attempt to thwart an evil supernatural plot involving crazed witches and power-crazed Germans.

You see, where other heroes might opt for a subtle, strategic approach, Hellboy adopts a more direct, visceral tack, and the game's context-sensitive fighting system is designed to enable players to call on a range of brawling and grappling moves as well as charging up special attacks, such as the fearsome Right Hand of Doom.

And if the odds get a little too overwhelming, you can always opt to pick up a few of your opponents and throw them into the melee or simply smash down a wall to move into a clearer space.

Whilst the PSP version is likely to employ most of these features (hopefully including the mooted two-player co-op mode that brings in other characters from the red one's universe, such as Abe Sapien and Liz Sherman), we're currently at a loss as to how the mobile version will shape up.

For now though, it all sounds like devilishly good fun to us.
