In literary terms, we all know the tale of two star-cross'd lovers doesn't end well.

But you hope the experience of two literary-cross'd lovers who enjoy honest-to-goodness word games would be more uplifting, but apparently it's not so.

Well, at least, when it comes to US publisher Freeverse's take on the situation.

It's been working on iPhone game Hanged - basically the guessing game hangman shot through with a gothic tale of broken hearts and the potential of the gallow if you can't guess the right word in the requisite number of attempts.

Good love gone ho--i-ly -ro-- in other words.

It's all presented in suitably terrifying form, too, thanks to stop motion animation from New York artist Patrick Dorian.

You can check out the game's intro video on Freeverse’s website.

Unlike the end of various dictators, at least you don't get to see the whole damned process if you fail: only the convulsions of feet as the mannequin jerks around.

However, that was apparently more than enough for Apple, which has rejected the game based on its original 12+ rating, asking for it to be resubmitted as 17+.

Assuming it passes muster this time, Hanged will be available for its appropriately mature market in time for Christmas.
