HTC has confirmed that the new version of the Android OS, 2.2 (Froyo) will be rolled out to the majority of its phones this year.

Speaking with Pocket Lint, an HTC source said that "most phones launched this year will get an upgrade to [Android] 2.2," and that "updates will come in the second half of the year."

This follows Google’s announcement of the Android 2.2 update, which will boast such features as being able to turn your phone into a portable wi-fi hotspot as well as a significant speed boost.

HTC is, understandably, starting the rollout with its most popular handsets. This should see the Desire in the UK and the Incredible in the US receiving updates first.

The statement puts into doubt whether older handsets will receive the 2.2 update at all. As owners of HTC Hero will know all too well, even when an HTC update is promised it can take up to a year to come around.
