If creating one truly great puzzle game is a notoriously tricky business, following it up with another appears to be nigh on impossible.

How else can you explain the fact that while designers of platform games and first-person shooters have gone on to repeat or better their feats, the likes of Alexey Pajitnov (he came up with Tetris) and even Mr. Rubik have struggled to re-scale the lofty heights (the Cube was a true phenomenon – but the Rubic Snake?)

However, it might just be that the chaps behind Q Entertainment are the exception that proves the rule. Having already bequeathed us the mighty Lumines for PSP, the none too shabby Meteos on DS and the impending Every Extend Extra, they've now unveiled plans for their latest pocket puzzler, Gunpey.

To be truthful though, they've enlisted inspiration from the late Gunpei Yokoi (the creator of the Game Boy, Virtual Boy and Wonderswan handhelds) to rework one of his ideas into an innovative puzzle game with dynamic music that changes as you play.

Promised to "test your reflexes, stretch your mind and dazzle your senses", Gunpey looks to continue the integration of musical and visual themes that are becoming the signature for Q Entertainment's titles.

The essential gameplay requires players to flip squares containing angled lines to make a connection across five columns (at which point the row will be removed) before the tiles reach the top of the screen. Stylised music playing out against 40 colourful backgrounds should keep most senses occupied, whilst a two-player multiplayer mode ensures the competitive urge will be catered too.

Slated to arrive this Christmas, puzzle fans should connect their mouse pointer with the stationary 'Track It' button below in order to line up automatic updates on the game.
