GreatAppADay does the hard work, so you don't have to

It says something about the opportunities on the App Store that there's even money to be made from promoting the free gems that populate certain portions of it.

FreeAppADay.com has already generated headlines aplenty since its January launch, and now Aqua Globs developer Qwiboo has taken on the mantel with the release of its own off-portal app discovery site.

GreatAppADay.com, as you might expect, offers a similar service to its rival, but comes with one fundamental difference: it doesn't charge developers for promoting their apps.

Instead, the site markets one new free app per day without taking a fee, Qwiboo's Vladimir Roth claiming this actually helps maintain the overall quality of the apps the site lists.

"I came across a couple of websites listing free iPhone apps, but I found they were missing some important and helpful features that I knew we could provide. More importantly, I noticed that developers have to pay to have their apps featured," says Roth.

"GreatAppADay was created to be free for all to use, especially developers. Small indie developers find it particularly difficult to get fair exposure in the mad world of iPhone app marketing. In addition, our visitors can be confident that what they see on Great App a Day are the hidden gems in the piles of apps out there, not apps that some developer paid us to feature."

Indeed, Roth says Qwiboo takes time to make sure it only picks titles that have picked up positive reviews, adding that the "overall polish and feel is just as important as the playability".

He goes on. "Eventually we want to build a community around the site, and the next step would be to have a committee of dedicated people from different fields, editors, users, developers, etc. helping to decide which games to feature," he adds.

The site marks a new chapter for Qwiboo, which has attracted attention from gamers since the launch of its popular line-draw title Aqua Globs last summer. It's a branch off Roth doesn't see ending with GreatAppADay, either.

"We hope to continue to build on our network, and GreatAppADay is a fantastic way of doing just that. There are many more websites and apps in the pipeline which will only enhance our reputation and network. GreatAppADay is just the beginning."
