Canabalt was one of the surprise iPhone games of 2009.

Incredibly simple and ported from its original Flash incarnation, the addictiveness of the one-touch jumping man provided a purity of experience that's proved surprisingly difficult for developers to match.

The question now is whether Semi Secret Software can match its iPhone debut.

It's certainly taken a similar route in terms of genesis with Gravity Hook, which was originally released as a Flash game in 2008.

Officially, the iPhone version will be based on the new Gravity Hook HD game that's been developed.

Do again better

"Gravity Hook HD is a chance for us to revisit our first project with an extra year of experience and see if we have anything worthwhile to add," Semi Secret notes on its website.

"New graphics, new sound, new controls, and new gameplay make HD an entirely new game. For those hardcore fans of the old version, we've also included a special treat! But you'll need to climb at least 500m to find it..."

As for the gameplay, you control a little robot chap who moves around thanks to his telescopic arm, which you can hook onto items in the environment.

These are all physically modelled and so he swings and rotates around depending on their exact attributes. Your progress is measured in terms of how high you can get.

Overall, the feeling is a little like playing a 2D topdown scrolling version of Spider-Man.

You can play the Flash version of the game here.

No date has been given in terms of when the iPhone version of the game will be released, only the comment that iPhone-specific details will be forthcoming...

Soon, we hope.
