Chief executive of Google, Eric Schmidt has apparently been running his mouth off about a new Android tablet at a Los Angeles party, The New York Times reports.

While there are already a fair few tablets on the horizon that will run on the Android operating system, it seems Google might want to take the plunge themselves.

The New York Times writes that people with direct knowledge of the project, who didn't want to be named because the new device hasn't exactly been officially outed yet, said Google had been experimenting in "stealth mode" with publishers to explore delivery of books, magazines and other content on a tablet.

If it materialises, it would be just one of a truckload of tablets and slate computers from a wide range of manufacturers, including HP, Nokia, and Microsoft.
