Google will debut a service that lets developers sell digital content from inside their apps from as early as next week reports PocketGamer.biz.

In-app purchases have been hidden in the Android SDK for some time now, but Google hasn’t yet turned the system on to make the feature accessible to app developers.

“The news on the ground is the switch will be thrown sometime during the next couple of weeks; early March at the latest,” our sister site reports.

Apple introduced in-app purchases to the iPhone in iOS 3.0 in June 2009. The Cupertino company takes a 30:70 share on all content purchases. It’s not yet known how much Google will take on each transaction.

The in-app purchases won’t just be for smartphones, of course. Developers will be able to provide digital content and virtual doodads on the armfuls of tablets scheduled for release in 2011.
