Glu gets stuck on one of the big boys

Glu and Warner Bros Digital Distribution announce partnership
|

Glu Mobile has just announced a worldwide partnership with Warner Bros Digital Distribution. It will of course result in more licensed games from Glu, as the mobile games company now has the worldwide rights to develop, market and distribute games based on films released by the film and TV behemoth – everything from DC Comics and Looney Tunes to Hanna-Barbara.

Securing the rights to the enormously popular DC Comics brand is a huge advantage for Glu in itself. Add that to the various other big brands this deal encapsulates and you've some indication of the huge potential of the tie-up in mobile, which is notoriously 'brand sensitive', as the marketing folk say. (In plain English, that means we download names we've already heard of).

Through a separate agreement, Glu will also distribute selected Warner Bros. Entertainment's mobile games based on films such as Ocean's Thirteen and 300. Presumably these games (for example, the lacklustre 300 mobile game) were already in development before the deal was struck, and other such blockbuster films from Warner Bros Entertainment will be developed and published by Glu in future.

Has Glu joined the likes of Gameloft and, erm, EA Mobile in the race to become the EA-like colossus of mobile games? Perhaps – we just hope it keeps turning out decent non-film related titles like Project Gotham Racing Mobile alongside games developed on the back of this new deal.
