The idea to make use of the cameras housed in mobile phones to create motion sensing games and applications has been about for a while, but it hasn't really been pursued very aggressively yet.

Sony Ericsson, however, is looking to make some serious moves in that department and according to Pocket-lint, has already managed to net the Californian company GestureTek into the deal.

Which is pretty significant seeing as GestureTek has a proven track record in that area, having supplied the technology for the PlayStation 2's EyeToy.

The great news is that games supporting the feature will work on new and old phones alike (assuming they can play games and have a camera), making this pretty exciting for mobile gamers whether you're packing the latest hardware or not.

There's lots of big talk surrounding the announcement just now and versions of Crash Bandicoot and Super Monkey Ball that support the feature have already been announced. Whether or not this indicates a concerted effort on Sony Ericsson's behalf to adopt a differentiating factor that could help it go head to head with the new N-Gage or the iPhone's forthcoming games, remains to be seen.
