Semiconductor specialist Nvidia has launched a brand-new cloud gaming platform called the Nvidia GeForce Grid, which aims to offer gaming-as-a-service providers the chance to stream next-gen games to "virtually any device" without the lag "that hampers" current offerings.

The platform will allow providers to deliver advanced visuals to connected TVs, PCs, tablets, and smartphones running iOS or Android at a low latency. Furthermore, the companies that offer their games won't be subjected to large operating costs, which are generally related to high-energy usage.

"Gamers will now have access to seamlessly play the world's best titles anywhere, anytime, from phones, tablets, TVs or PCs," Phil Eisler, Nvidia's general manager of cloud gaming, said. "GeForce GRID represents a massive disruption in how games are delivered and played."

A number of gaming-as-a-service providers and developers already endorse the new network, including David Perry, the CEO of streaming service Gaikai.

"Not so long ago, engineers said cloud gaming was impossible, and that it was not possible for cloud gaming to be as fast or high-quality as local, console-based gaming. Obviously, they didn't know that Gaikai and Nvidia would be working together. We're proving the doubters wrong," Perry said.
