It's widely accepted that dungeons and dragons go together. But even the shortest Google research will tell you that there's no absolute rule which states that one can't exist without the other.
If proof were needed, just visit Hyrule. The
Zelda universe, where
A Link to the Past is set, features plenty of dungeons without a fire-breathing creature in sight, though a cast of alternative fantastical creatures can be expected.
Playing this adventure will make you visit every corner of this vast magical land, meeting every one of its myriad characters and see you fight fearsome foes and overcome countless puzzles as you accept the quest to save Hyrule from certain doom.
In typical role-playing fashion, your character, Link, starts off with nothing but the clothes on his back. Combing the land for misplaced money and hidden treasure, venturing in and out of dungeons, solving puzzles, surviving dungeons and defeating adversaries soon sees him building up his weapon and item collection, which in turn increases his repertoire of possible actions, thereby allowing access to previously unreachable areas of Hyrule.
If it sounds dry, then that's essentially because we're boiling
A Link to the Past down to its core components and this is unfair because the game is so much more. The bonus
Four Swords game included on the cartridge may provide bursts of rousing multiplayer fun but it's the magnificence of the main singleplayer adventure, with its uniquely varied challenges, unexpected turns and delightfully balanced play, that utterly captivates while effectively rewriting the role-playing rulebook.
