Apple launches consumer webpage explaining Game Center

Continuing today's barrage of Game Center news, Apple has launched a page on Apple.com explaining how the service will work.

The social gaming tech is linked to your Apple ID, so you just have to sign in as per usual on iTunes and create a username.

Once you're signed in, you'll remain signed in, unless you specifically decide to sign out

Neatly, you'll be able to assign more than one email address to your account, making it easier for your friends to find you.

In terms of features, it's the usual array of achievements, high scores and leaderboards we've already seen in technology such as OpenFeint and Scoreloop.

Multiplayer gaming - where supported by games - works in terms of you challenging your friends in real time for a game via push notifications, or using the automatic matchmaking system to play someone of an equivalent skill level.

You can also download games from within Game Center.

The only limitation is that you'll need to be running iOS 4.1 and have an iPhone 3GS, a third generation iPod touch or something better. Older hardware isn't supported, while iPad users will have to wait until November and the release of iOS 4.2.

You can see the complete Apple description of Game Center here.
