Angry Birds, Real Racing, Dungeon Hunter 2 will be launch games for Game Center
Focus on multiplayer
During Apple's autumn conference, Steve Jobs demonstrated some of the features of the company's forthcoming social and multiplayer technology platform Game Center.
Using an account entitled Thor, he talked through how it worked, explaining that Thor had 73 friends and 19 Game Center-enabled games, highlighting Angry Birds.
At the moment though Angry Birds doesn't have any multiplayer options, which suggests a new update of the game including such features could be available at Game Center's launch next week.
Other games that can be clearly seen on Thor's account as supporting Game Center are Real Racing, Field Runners, Enigmo 2, and Pac-Man.
Of these, Real Racing already has a multiplayer option, hosted on developer Firemint's own Cloudcell technology, while Dungeon Hunter 2 has announced such features via the Gameloft Live service.
Indeed, despite talking about Angry Birds, Jobs's demonstration of a push notification multiplayer challenge was actually for Dungeon Hunter 2.
Maybe you shouldn't be holding your breath for Angry Birds multiplayer, then.
For the record, the current versions of Fieldrunners, Enigmo 2, and Pac-Man are single-player only.
Of course, we'd expect a lot of popular old games to have Game Center retrospectively fitted to them, as well as the majority of new games. Whether these will all also get proper multiplayer remains unclear.
But either way, it looks like next week will be a busy one in terms of updates.
